Manufacturer's description

Mobil Jet Oil 254 is a third-generation, extra-high-performance synthetic aircraft gas turbine lubricant formulated from a specially prepared hindered-ester base stock fortified with a unique chemical additive package. Compared with typical Type II lubricants, it reduces bulk oil oxidation by up to 50 percent and shows deposit control capability 50°F higher, while operating effectively between -40°C and 232°C. Its closely controlled low-temperature viscosity and pour point below -54°C ensure good fluidity for starting and lubrication down to -40°C, while extensive laboratory and in-flight testing confirm excellent bulk oil stability at temperatures up to 232°C with low evaporation loss. The synthetic base stock viscosity, rather than shear-prone VI additives, provides load-carrying ability, and the lubricant offers excellent resistance to foaming. Mobil Jet Oil 254 is recommended for turbo-jet, turbo-fan, turbo-prop and turbo-shaft (helicopter) gas turbine engines in commercial and military service, as well as industrial and marine gas turbine applications. It is approved against the High Thermal Stability (HTS) classification of MIL-PRF-23699 and carries builder approvals from engine and accessory manufacturers including Honeywell/Lycoming, Rolls-Royce/Allison, CFM International, General Electric, International Aero Engines, Pratt & Whitney, SNECMA, Hamilton Sundstrand and others (specific engine approval must be verified with the builder).

Applications

  • Aircraft gas-turbine engines of the turbojet, turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft (helicopter) types, in commercial and military service.
  • Aircraft-type gas-turbine engines used in industrial or marine applications.
  • Approved against the High Thermal Stability (HTS) classification of US Military Specification MIL-PRF-23699, and compatible with other synthetic gas-turbine lubricants meeting MIL-PRF-23699 (mixing with other products is not recommended, as it would reduce Mobil Jet Oil 254's superior performance).
  • Fully compatible with all metals used in gas-turbine construction, and with F Rubber (Viton A), H Rubber (Buna N) and other commonly used seal materials.
  • Approved by major engine and accessory builders including Honeywell/Lycoming Turbines, Rolls-Royce/Allison Engine Company, CFM International, General Electric, International Aero Engines, Pratt & Whitney Group, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Rolls-Royce Limited, SNECMA and Honeywell/Garrett Turbine Engine Company (specific engine or equipment approval must be verified with the builder).

Performance & benefits

  • Compared with a typical Type II lubricant, reduces bulk-oil oxidation by up to 50% and shows deposit-control capability 50°F (about 28°C) higher.
  • Low pour point (below -54°C) ensures good low-temperature fluidity, permitting starting and lubrication at temperatures as low as -40°C.
  • Excellent bulk-oil stability at temperatures up to 232°C (450°F) for extended periods, with an evaporation rate low enough to prevent excessive loss of volume.
  • Load-carrying ability comes from the synthetic base-stock viscosity, so it is not subject to loss from viscosity-index-additive shear.
  • Chemically stable at high operating temperatures, reducing evaporation losses and lowering oil consumption.
  • Excellent resistance to foaming maintains film strength under demanding operating conditions.
  • Good low-temperature fluidity permits start-up and ensures effective lubrication of critical components at temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C).
