Standards & approvals

  • MAN M 3271-2 — biogas engine oil

MAN 3271 variant for biogas or landfill-gas engines, where the oil neutralises acids from gas impurities.

  • MAN M 3271-5 — gas engine oil

The most recent level in the MAN 3271 series for stationary gas engine oils.

  • MTU Series 4000 gas engines — natural gas/biogas oil recommendation

MTU's oil recommendation for its Series 4000 gas engines running on natural gas or biogas.

  • MWM TR 0199-99-2105 — gas engine oil

Manufacturer's description

Long-life, low-ash gas engine oil. Shell Mysella S5 N is a high-performance oil, highly regarded for use in four-stroke, spark-ignition gas engines that require a "low ash" oil. Shell Mysella S5 N meets the needs of the new generation of stationary gas engines designed to comply with emerging legislation limiting NOx emissions, as well as those using the latest "lean" or "clean" burn technology. Shell Mysella S5 N has been specially developed to deliver extended oil drain intervals in those natural gas engines where oil life is an operational limiting factor.

Applications

  • Four-stroke, spark-ignited gas engines requiring a low-ash oil.
  • Suitable for the newer generation of stationary gas engines designed to meet emerging NOx emission regulations and for 'lean-burn' or 'clean-burn' combustion technology.

Performance & benefits

  • Extended lifeBy resisting oxidation and nitration, viscosity increase and the formation of harmful acids, particularly in demanding combined heat and power (CHP) applications, it offers a step up in oil drain period relative to the previous generation of gas engine oils. (When used with landfill gas or biogas, oil life will depend on the level of contaminants in the gas.)
  • Engine protectionShell Mysella S5 N provides superior deposit control and piston cleanliness in advanced engine designs. Shell Mysella S5 N is formulated with low ash and phosphorus levels, which help extend the life of valves and spark plugs, and offers full compatibility with emission catalysts.
  • System efficiencyShell Mysella S5 N has been designed to help prevent knock and thus allow engines to be run at full load and optimum efficiency, with viscosity control helping to minimise friction losses. Shell Mysella S5 N maintains excellent cleanliness and deposit control for the boiler, turbocharger and cooler, allowing the whole system to operate with consistent performance and efficiency over time.
  • MTU Series 4000 L61, L62, L63, L64 and L32/L33
  • Shell Mysella S5 N is suitable for engine types that require a low-ash oil. Shell Mysella S5 N is approved by
