Marcol 82 is a medicinal-grade white oil: a purified mixture of liquid saturated hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum through several refining stages, including an ultimate purification by catalytic hydrogenation. It is a colourless, transparent oily liquid, essentially odourless and tasteless, manufactured to exceed the purity requirements of the Pharmacopoeias, with superior chemical inertness giving better colour and oxidative stability than most mineral and vegetable oils when stored and used under controlled conditions. Marcol 82 is widely used in cosmetics as an emollient and moisturiser in cleansing oils and milks, body lotions and creams, and suntan lotions; in baby products such as shampoos, baby oils and bath oils; in hair care products including hot oil treatments, gels and scalp pomades; as a neutral and protective diluent for other cosmetic ingredients such as essential oils; and in bath cubes and anti-perspirant/deodorant sticks. It offers excellent skin compatibility, very low irritancy and no comedogenicity. In pharmaceuticals, its high purity — free of toxic polycyclic aromatics and heavy metals — makes it an ingredient of topical ointments and petroleum jellies, a pelletiser aid, and a component in gelatine capsule manufacture. Marcol 82 is registered to NSF H1 and meets or exceeds FDA 21 CFR 178.3620(a), the US Pharmacopeia/National Formulary Light Mineral Oil monograph, and the European Pharmacopoeia Light Liquid Paraffin monograph. Typical properties include a kinematic viscosity of 14.5-17.5 mm²/s at 40°C, density of 845-858 kg/m³ at 15°C, flash point ≥182°C and pour point ≤-6°C.

Applications

• Marcol 82 can be used in a variety of food-contact, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications, subject to the applicable laws and regulations in each country.
• To limit ingestion and aspiration hazards, it should not be used in nasal, oral or lip-care products, or as a food additive other than for food-contact materials.
• Used as an emollient and moisturiser (cleansing oils and milks, body lotions and creams, suntan lotions and milk, make-up powders).
• Used in baby products (shampoos, baby oils, bath oils).
• Used in hair-care products (hot-oil treatments, gels, scalp pomades).
• Used as a neutral, protective diluent for other cosmetic ingredients such as essential oils.
• Used in other applications such as bath cubes, and antiperspirant and deodorant sticks.
• Used as an ingredient in pharmaceutical topical ointments and petroleum jellies.
• Used as a pelletiser aid, and in the manufacture of gelatine capsules.
