Manufacturer's description

Mobilgear SHC XMP Series are high-performance, fully synthetic industrial gear oils based on Mobil's polyalphaolefin (PAO) technology, chosen for its exceptional oxidation resistance, thermal stability, naturally high viscosity index and excellent low-temperature fluidity. Their high viscosity index and low traction coefficient help reduce power consumption in many gear drives, while an advanced proprietary additive system provides excellent protection against scuffing and a high level of resistance to micropitting fatigue, along with improved lubrication of gearbox rolling element bearings. They are recommended for enclosed industrial gear drives — steel-on-steel spur, helical and bevel gears — especially heavily loaded, surface-hardened gearboxes prone to micropitting, and for applications with extreme low or high temperatures or severe corrosion exposure. Typical uses include wind turbines (particularly shock-loaded, remote or extreme-temperature units), plastic extruder gearboxes, and modern heavily loaded gearboxes in the paper, steel, oil, textile, lumber and cement industries. Key benefits include outstanding rust and corrosion protection (including salt and acidic water), excellent filter life even when moderately wet, strong compatibility with ferrous and non-ferrous metals at elevated temperatures, and good compatibility with mineral gear oils for easier conversion (though system flushing is recommended before changeover). Grades ISO VG 320 and 460 meet or exceed AGMA 9005-F16 and DIN 51517-3:2009-06. Mobilgear SHC XMP 460 is the ISO VG 460 grade of the series, with a viscosity of 460 mm²/s at 40°C and 48.7 mm²/s at 100°C, a viscosity index of 166, a pour point of -36°C and a flash point of 232°C.

Applications

  • Mobilgear SHC XMP Series are supreme-performance, fully synthetic industrial gear oils designed to provide optimum equipment protection and oil life, even under extreme conditions.
  • They are formulated to resist micropitting of modern, case-hardened gearing and can operate in both high- and low-temperature environments.
  • Wind turbines, especially highly loaded and shock-loaded units, remotely located units and extreme-temperature environments.
  • Plastic-extruder gearboxes.
  • Modern, highly loaded gearboxes used in the paper, steel, oil, textile, lumber and cement industries, where gear protection and optimum oil life are required.
  • Compatible with mineral-oil-based products, though admixture may reduce performance; before changing a system to a Mobilgear SHC XMP product, it should be thoroughly cleaned out and flushed to achieve the full performance benefits.

Performance & benefits

  • Superb protection from micropitting fatigue wear, along with high resistance to traditional scuffing wear: extends gear and bearing life in enclosed gear drives operating under extreme conditions of load, speed and temperature, reducing unexpected downtime and maintenance — especially critical for hard-to-access gearboxes.
  • Excellent resistance to degradation at high temperatures: extends oil life and drain intervals, reducing oil consumption and manpower costs.
  • Low-traction PAO base stocks improve gear efficiency: reduce energy consumption and lower operating temperatures.
  • High-viscosity-index base stocks reduce viscosity change with temperature: enables operation at both high and low temperatures, especially critical in remote applications with no oil heating or cooling.
  • Excellent resistance to rust and corrosion, and very good demulsibility: smooth, trouble-free operation at high temperatures or in water-contaminated applications, with excellent compatibility with soft metals.
  • Outstanding filter life, even in the presence of water: fewer filter changes and reduced maintenance costs.
  • Excellent compatibility with common gearbox materials of construction and with mineral-based gear oils: simple conversion from many mineral products.
