Manufacturer's description
Mobiltherm 603 is a high performance heat transfer oil from the Mobiltherm 600 Series, intended for closed, cold-oil-sealed indirect heating and cooling installations across a wide range of industrial processes. Formulated from highly refined base stocks resistant to thermal cracking and chemical oxidation, it is very thermally stable and capable of an extremely long service life without deposit formation or viscosity increase. Its heat transfer efficiency, pumpability at both start-up and operating temperatures, and specific heat and thermal conductivity all support rapid, efficient heat dissipation, while resistance to thermal cracking helps its flash point remain stable in service. Mobiltherm 603 is recommended for bulk oil temperatures up to 285 °C in closed systems and up to 150 °C in open systems. Typical properties: kinematic viscosity 20.2 mm²/s at 40 °C and 4.2 mm²/s at 100 °C, density 0.835 kg/l at 15 °C, flash point 194 °C (Cleveland open cup) and pour point -15 °C. It must be used only in forced-circulation systems, should not be mixed with other oils, and is not recommended for open systems where hot oil is exposed directly to air, since sprayed or leaked hot oil may spontaneously ignite. Key benefits include high resistance to thermal cracking and decomposition, keeping systems free of sludge and coke deposits and reducing maintenance needs; excellent thermal properties for high heat transfer rates and lower operating costs; good thermal and oxidative stability for long, trouble-free service life; and good low-temperature fluidity for easy cold-system start-up. The datasheet lists no formal specification or approval codes.
Applications
- Mobiltherm heat-transfer oils should not be mixed with other oils, since this can impair their thermal and oxidation stability and complicate analysis of useful oil life.
- If used above the recommended maximum temperature, vapour lock may occur unless the system is designed for higher temperatures by pressurising with an inert gas such as nitrogen.
- Should be used only in systems with forced circulation; systems relying on convection do not provide sufficient flow to prevent local overheating and rapid oil deterioration, and are not recommended for open systems where hot oil is exposed directly to air.
- Mobiltherm 603 — closed systems up to 285 °C, open systems up to 150 °C.
- Mobiltherm 605 — closed systems up to 315 °C, open systems up to 180 °C.
- Mobiltherm 610 — closed systems up to 315 °C, open systems up to 250 °C.
- Mobiltherm 611 — closed systems up to 315 °C, open systems up to 275 °C.
