Manufacturer's description

Mobil SHC™ Rarus Series oils are supreme-performance air compressor lubricants primarily intended for severe-duty rotary screw and vane air compressors, particularly suited to demanding service where other synthetic products fall short, such as applications with high final compression temperatures or where extended oil drain intervals are desired. The formulation offers the potential to deliver up to three times the oil drain interval of a leading synthetic compressor lubricant. Outstanding thermal/oxidation stability underpins the extended drain interval and reduces maintenance downtime, while excellent varnish and sludge control keeps systems clean and extends compressor oil life. High-performance synthetic base stocks with a high viscosity index enable wide temperature range capability and effective lubrication at high temperatures, and high load-carrying capability protects equipment and extends service periods. The oils also provide exceptional resistance to rust and corrosion, very good antiwear performance, demulsibility, foam control and air release, multi-metal compatibility, and excellent water separability that reduces carryover, sludge formation and coalescer/cooler blockage. Mobil SHC Rarus 46 (ISO VG 46) has a kinematic viscosity of 44.1 mm²/s at 40 °C and 7.1 mm²/s at 100 °C, a viscosity index of 122, a pour point of -45 °C and a flash point of 197 °C (Pensky-Martens). It belongs to the Mobil SHC Rarus Series (ISO VG 32, 46, 68), which is recommended for rotary screw and vane air compressors, especially oil-injection-cooled screw compressors and units with a history of oil degradation, poor valve performance or deposit formation, and is effective in continuous high-temperature service with discharge temperatures up to 200°C. It is not for use in breathing air applications.

Applications

  • Primarily for rotary screw and vane air compressors, very effective in screw-type compressors with oil-injection cooling.
  • Compressors with a history of excess oil degradation, poor valve performance or deposit formation.
  • Compressors operating under severe conditions, particularly effective for continuous high-temperature operation with discharge temperatures up to 200°C.
  • Compressor systems with critical gears and bearings.
  • Not for air compressors used in breathing-air applications.
  • Compatible with all metals used in compressor construction and with conventional mineral oil based air-compressor oils, though mixture with other oils may detract from total performance.

Performance & benefits

  • Outstanding thermal/oxidation stability helps provide up to three times the oil-drain interval versus a leading synthetic compressor oil and reduces maintenance downtime.
  • Excellent varnish and sludge control helps deliver cleanliness and extended compressor oil life.
  • High-performance synthetic base stocks with high viscosity index enable wide-temperature-range capability and effective lubrication at high temperatures.
  • High load-carrying capability protects equipment and extends life, helping minimize unexpected downtime and extend service periods.
  • Exceptional resistance to rusting and corrosion, very good anti-wear, demulsibility, foam control, air release and multi-metal compatibility.
  • Excellent water separability helps reduce carryover to downstream equipment, reduces sludge formation in crankcases and discharge lines, and helps reduce blockage of coalescers and coolers.
