Biodegradable HEES synthetic hydraulic fluid for environmentally sensitive areas

Business customers only. We sell wholesale, invoiced to registered companies.

Standards & approvals

  • Biodegradable hydraulic fluid HEES — ISO 15380

Class HEES of ISO 15380: a biodegradable hydraulic fluid on a synthetic ester base.

  • SS 15 54 34 — environmental requirements for hydraulic fluids (Sweden)

Swedish standard: high biodegradability, low aquatic toxicity, finished fluid not classified as environmentally hazardous; required near groundwater and drinking water sources.

  • ISO 12922 HFDU — fire-resistant hydraulic fluid

Class HFDU of ISO 12922: water-free, fire-resistant synthetic hydraulic fluids for foundries, steel plants and mines.

  • OECD 301B biodegradability above 60 %

OECD test measuring carbon dioxide evolved over 28 days; above 60 % counts as "readily biodegradable".

Manufacturer's description

Advanced biodegradable, HEES-type synthetic hydraulic fluid. Readily biodegradable with low ecotoxicity, particularly suitable for use in environmentally sensitive areas where eco-label compliance is required, including US waters. The fully synthetic esters, blended with ashless additives, give this fluid an excellent blend of lubrication performance and environmental acceptability.

Applications

  • Meets the requirements of EU Ecolabel certificate number NL/027/019
  • Meets the requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP)
  • FM ApprovedFor the full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, please consult your local Shell technical helpdesk or the OEM approval website. Low ecotoxicity — classified as "not harmful" to bacteria, algae, freshwater and marine invertebrates, and fish when tested as water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) according to OECD and EPA test guidelines. Compatibility and miscibility
  • Fluid compatibilityShell PANOLIN fluids are miscible with mineral oils. However, to ensure that the environmental properties and performance of Shell PANOLIN fluids are maintained, the system should be drained and flushed thoroughly when changing fluids.
  • Compatible with seal materials and paintsCompatible with fluoroelastomers (FPM/FKM) such as Viton. Other seal materials and system components, such as paints, may be adversely affected, and advice should be sought from the respective manufacturers.
  • Meets the USDA BioPreferred programme
  • FM Approved

Performance & benefits

  • Good wear protection: advanced ashless (zinc-free) anti-wear additives provide protection over a wide range of conditions, proven in tough industry-standard tests such as the Eaton Vickers 35VQ25 vane pump and the Komatsu HPV35+35 high-pressure piston pump; the excellent anti-wear properties and high viscosity index often allow use where ISO 11158 (HM/HV) or DIN 51524 Part 2 or 3 (HLP/HVLP) mineral hydraulic fluids are specified. Bulk fluid operating temperature should not exceed 90°C.
  • Maintaining system efficiency: excellent viscosity/temperature characteristics minimise viscosity change with operating temperature, giving true ‘multigrade’ characteristics; outstanding cleanliness and filterability, together with excellent water separation, air release and antifoam characteristics, help maintain or enhance hydraulic-system efficiency.
  • Lower environmental impact: an environmentally acceptable lubricant as defined by the USA EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit, with reduced impact from leaks or accidental spillage in marine environments compared with conventional mineral oils; readily biodegradable - over 60% in 28 days in the OECD 301B test - and low ecotoxicity.
  • Very high renewables content: a mean biobased content of 82% (ASTM D 6866).
  • Fire-resistant: HFDU fire-resistant hydraulic fluid with a high flash point.
