Standards & approvals

  • ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02 (2002)

The 2002 edition of the AGMA enclosed gear drive lubrication practice, superseded by F16 of 2016.

  • Industrial gear lubricant - CKC — ISO 12925

The international standard for enclosed gear drive lubricants; class CKC is the mineral oil with antioxidant, anticorrosion and antiwear additives, for moderate duty.

  • Industrial gear lubricant CKD — ISO 12925

Class CKD of ISO 12925-1: a gear oil with the same additive package as CKC but greater thermal stability, for gear units running hot.

  • US EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP)

EPA permit requiring environmentally acceptable lubricants at oil-to-sea interfaces of vessels.

Manufacturer's description

Mobil SHC Aware Gear 150 is a high performance, anti-wear gear oil for marine applications from ExxonMobil, formulated to meet the U.S. EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) guidelines for environmentally acceptable lubricants. It is one of three grades in the series (ISO VG 68, 100 and 150) and provides excellent wear protection for gears and bearings, safeguards against rust and corrosion, and offers outstanding oxidation properties across a wide operating temperature range with excellent low-temperature start-up and air release. This ISO VG 150 grade has a kinematic viscosity of 17.8 mm²/s at 100 °C and 150 mm²/s at 40 °C, a viscosity index of 135 and a pour point of -30 °C. It suits marine controllable pitch propeller and thruster applications, enclosed steel-on-steel spur, helical and bevel gear drives, systems requiring readily biodegradable and minimally toxic fluids, environmentally sensitive marine and mobile equipment, and select stern tube applications. It holds thruster builder approvals from Nakashima, HHI Hyundai, KTE Nakashima Korea and KHI, plus SKF Marine approval (Simplex stern tube bushes and seals) and Wärtsilä Norway approval as a stern tube and seals lubricating oil, environmentally acceptable lubricant, and meets or exceeds AGMA 9005-E02-EP, ISO L-CKC/L-CKD (ISO 12925-1:2024) and US EPA VGP:2013 requirements. Key benefits include outstanding load-carrying and anti-wear properties that protect against micropitting and scuffing, a shear-stable high viscosity index for protection over a wide temperature range, excellent resistance to high-temperature degradation, and very good demulsibility with resistance to rust and corrosion.

Applications

  • Marine controllable-pitch propeller and thruster applications.
  • Suitable for enclosed gear drives, including steel-on-steel spur, helical and bevel designs.
  • Systems where readily biodegradable and minimally toxic fluids may be required.
  • Marine and mobile equipment operating in environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Can be used in select stern tube applications.
  • Has thruster builder approvals from Nakashima, HHI, Hyundai, KTE, Nakashima Korea and KHI.

Performance & benefits

  • Meets US EPA 2013 Vessel General Permit requirements for environmentally acceptable lubricants.
  • Outstanding load-carrying and anti-wear properties protect system components against micropitting and scuffing, helping provide long equipment life.
  • Shear-stable, high viscosity index helps sustain component protection over a wide temperature range.
  • Excellent resistance to degradation at high temperatures.
  • Very good demulsibility and resistance to rust and corrosion.
