Standards & approvals

  • Lubricant designation CGLP — DIN 51502

The DIN code for machine tool slideway oils, with antiwear additives and friction modifiers against stick-slip.

  • Slideway oil, class GA — ISO 19378

Class GA of the ISO slideway (way) lubricant classification: an oil for horizontal machine-tool slideways, with friction modifiers against stick-slip.

  • Slideway oil, class GB — ISO 19378

Class GB of the ISO slideway lubricant classification: a tackier oil for vertical slideways, so it does not drain off the surface.

Manufacturer's description

Mobil Vactra Oil No. 3 is a premium-quality slideway lubricant from the Mobil Vactra Oil Numbered Series, ISO VG 150, designed to meet the accuracy, aqueous coolant separability and equipment protection requirements of precision machine tools. Formulated from high-quality base stocks with a performance-balanced, advanced additive system, it provides controlled frictional properties, compatibility with aqueous metalworking fluids, and corrosion protection of parts and equipment. The unique additive package delivers exceptional frictional behaviour across a wide range of way materials, including steel-on-steel and steel-on-polymer, reducing stick-slip and chatter for smooth, uniform motion at design travel speeds, enhancing productivity, accuracy, tool life and surface finish, while separability from aqueous coolants minimises the corrosive effects of high-pH coolants. Mobil Vactra Oil No. 3 is normally recommended for large machines where way pressures are high and good precision is required, for vertical and inclined slideways where drain-down can be a problem, and for moderate-service machine tool gear drive mechanisms. It may be applied by hand, forced-feed lubricator or flood circulation on slideway systems combining cast iron, steel and non-metallic way materials, and is used for ball screws, linear guides, headstocks and translating screws and where oil contamination shortens aqueous coolant batch life. Key benefits include controlled frictional characteristics that eliminate stick-slip for consistently accurate machining, multi-material capability for product consolidation, separability from water and aqueous coolants that extends coolant life, strong adhesiveness that keeps the lubricant on critical surfaces, and long-term rust and corrosion protection. Typical properties: kinematic viscosity 156 mm²/s at 40 °C, flash point 248 °C (Cleveland open cup), pour point -6 °C. It meets or exceeds DIN 51502 CGLP, ISO L-GA and ISO L-GB (ISO 6743-13:2002).

Applications

  • Recommended for the lubrication of machine-tool slideway systems, designed for use with combinations of cast iron, steel and non-metallic way materials.
  • May be applied by hand, forced-feed lubricator, or in flood application by circulation system.
  • Suitable for use in applications requiring Fives Cincinnati specifications P53, P47 and P50.
  • No. 1 and No. 2 are recommended for horizontal slideways on small to medium-size machine tools; also suitable for circulating application in large machines and as a moderate-duty hydraulic fluid.
  • No. 3 and No. 4 are normally recommended for large machines where way pressures are high and good precision is required.
  • No. 3 and No. 4 are also recommended for vertical and inclined slideways where drain-down can be a problem, and for moderate-service machine-tool gear-drive mechanisms.
  • Can be used for lubrication of ball screws, linear guides, headstocks and translating screws.
  • Recommended for applications where oil contamination of aqueous coolants shortens coolant batch life.

Performance & benefits

  • Provide an extra margin of machinery protection by satisfying the stringent demands of slideways.
  • Excellent lubricity and load-carrying performance contribute significantly to improving the production of quality parts.
  • Separability from many water and aqueous coolants reduces the potential negative effects of cross-contamination, enhancing the service life and performance of both lubricant and coolant.
  • Controlled frictional characteristics help eliminate stick-slip, allowing consistently accurate machining.
  • Multi-material capability suits a wide range of way material combinations, allowing for product consolidation.
  • Water and aqueous-coolant separability helps improve the life and performance of many aqueous coolants.
  • Adhesiveness prevents removal of lubricant from critical surfaces.
  • Long-term rust and corrosion protection helps reduce the deterioration of sliding surfaces in the presence of water and aqueous coolants.
